Railroad Commissioner David Porter Tours Westmoreland Jewett Mine
Railroad Commissioner David Porter today toured the Texas Westmoreland Coal Company Jewett Mine, a 35,000-acre surface mine complex located between Dallas and Houston. The mine currently operates four active pits and supplies lignite to the Limestone Electric Generating Station owned by NRG Texas.
“Texas is the sixth largest coal producing state in the nation, and the Railroad Commission Surface Mining and Reclamation Division provides a stable regulatory framework to produce this important domestic energy resource while ensuring public safety and our natural environment are protected,” Porter said. “While Texas is known for oil and gas production, it is also important to realize that coal provides 34 percent of our state’s electricity and that 99 percent of the coal mined in Texas is used to help power electric generation plants to keep our homes and businesses running. This is why it’s important to continue fighting the EPA’s overreaching regulations, which – if implemented – will kill Texas jobs, damage our state economy and strain our power grid.”
The Commission recently announced increases in Texas coal production for 2014. Click here for more information.
Commissioner Porter was elected statewide to the Texas Railroad Commission on November 2, 2010. A Certified Public Accountant and successful small business owner, Commissioner Porter has worked with oil and gas producers for nearly three decades providing strategic financial advice and tax counsel. He has a long record of pro-business, free market, conservative credentials.
